Because Saving Water Makes Cents

Saving water really does not have to cause pain. If we all change just a few minor things in our life we can save millions of gallons. most people don't know that 8-10% of our energy goes into pumping water in and out of our homes so if you save water you save energy.

Lets look at some painless low or no cost ways to save:

  • Use recycled water anytime you can to water plants, wash cars, or flush the toilet. You can collect this water from the rain, your bathtub, rinsing dishes or water you used to cook with.
  • Repair your toilet, most toilets leak and use gobs of water. You can buy new repair kits for a fraction of the price of the water that is wasted. You can find many great kits out there, SelectAFlush is a dual flush conversion kit that saves water right away not only will it solve leaks it will save water with every flush by just using what you need. Home Depot has early close flappers that can save up to 20%.
  • Fill the sink with water and use it to wash all your vegetables at once before placing them in the fridge. you could then use that same water to pre-rinse you dishes before you wash them in the dishwasher.
  • Think ahead and don't defrost your food with water.
  • Buy a better low flow showerhead or take shorter showers. This goes for faucets as well. Do we really need to run the water all the time when shaving and brushing?
  • Hot Water...don't get me started, we all run the water to get hot and I don't blame you if it is 30 out the water is cold. D'Mand has come out with a special pump that will bring the hot water to temperature without running the water...now that is green.
  • Give all the small children a bath all at once in a bathtub and let them play as the water is used at that point so they should have some fun. Remember the first topic? Use the water to water the plants before you pull the plug. Do you have a dog? he won't care that the kids took a bath in the same water in fact I think he would like to pass on the bath all together but it would be a great time to let Fido take a dip. You can even let the water cool dress the children read them a book and get to the dog after they go to bed as the water will keep in the tub for hours.

I am going to give more ways to save over time please feel free to add ways with your comments and tell me how things are going with your water savings campaign.

  1. I was thrilled to find this blog. I installed a SelectAFlush dual flush conversion kit on my Mansfield 160 1.6 gallon toilet and reduced the rinse flush to just under 1 gallon and the solids flush used about 1.8 gallons. This enhanced the solids flush enough that my son has been unable to plug the toilet!! Imagine saving water and enhancing the normally poor performance of a 1.6 gallon I am a believer and highly recommend this inexpensive alternative.

  2. Thank you moreisles,

It sounds like you are saving a lot of water with our conversion kit. The news about our kit is spreading fast as people just do not want to pay over $500.00 for a new Dual Flush toilet in this hard economy. Enjoy and thank for your comment.

  3. I love this that the word has gotten out about Selectaflush. I have had one in my toilet for about 6 months and I have saved so much more water than I though. I really hope more people will save water
